Landscaping with Edibles

Landscaping with Edibles

These Marlborough homeowners wanted to install new perennials in an area that had been recently cleared of large trees.  Since the removal of the trees, the area was becoming overrun with weeds and ivy.

In this area the homeowners were also noticing a puddle forming from water that was being discharged by the sump pump.  When the trees were present, the tree roots would have pulled this water into the soil quickly.  Therefore a sunken area was created to poll the water, with water-hungry plants placed in the bowl.

The remainder of the area had a variety of evergreen and deciduous edible and medicinal plants installed.  Most of these plants would produce a fruit or seed that was beneficial to humans and to the wildlife.  They would also provide a staggered bloom pattern, so that there was colour throughout the year.

The entire area was then mulch with composted leaves–which adds bacterial and fungi that the new plants can use.
